Antec Power Supply - A Purchase I Regret

Thumbs down Antec Power Supply - A Purchase I Regret

I purchased a ANTEC NEOPOWER 480 power supply in September 2004 for a PC I was building. I was around the £100+ price at that time. Since building the computer I have had nothing but trouble with it. It is not the first computer I have built but it is the first that I have had major problems with. I have had to replace most of the major components and some of them twice. When things started to go wrong I visited some of the online forums to see if I could get some help and several people said it could be a power issue and to check the voltages in the bios etc. I disregarded the comments at the time thinking that I had paid a lot of money for the power supply and I had read ( and believed ) all the claims of quality and performance of ANTEC’S unit.

First I had to replace the Asus graphics card after 9 months ( luckily under warranty), next the motherboard went – that was just outside the warranty period ( 1 year ) but after quite a struggle with the supplier I managed to get my money back and purchased a new board. Another 5 months passed and the replacement graphics card failed also- that I had to replace out of my own pocket.

Last week I turned on the PC and BANG! a flash of light jumped from the back of the computer and it was dead. I contacted ANTEC via their website and they said could I tell them what was the date of purchased - I replied saying September 2004. Later that day I got a reply to say that the warranty had expired. Yes it had by 3 months only conveniently for them.

I feel I have been ripped off by purchasing this poor quality and faulty unit. This unit should have lasted much longer that 3 years. Not happy and I won’t be purchasing anything else from ANTEC.

Over the years, I've used many Antec power supplies, and have always been very pleased with the product. Neat, clean, and stable, they have never let me down.

it's always important to add up the wattage/power required of all the individual devices in a PC to make sure you get an adequate PSU with enough oomph ( technical term ) to run your system, with a bit of power headroom if possible.

Many recent Graphics cards take a considerable amount of power, so it is very important to make sure you get the correct wattage PSU for your rig. ( and think ahead also as you may later wish to upgrade some internals ( additional hard drives, newer graphics card etc )

I find Enermax and Corsair particularly well made and solid power supplies.

The power supply probably isn't the initial problem, even a low wattage power supply can feed the most demanding of computers, a lot of companies quote megga high power power supplies but most of the time it is over the top and not required.

I suggest your problem was the build process, did you use an anti static mat, if you did then it is products failure if not then it was just a problem waiting to happen.
If you used a strap, sorry when building a computer a strap is not good enough you need a mat, putting a component on top of the anti static bag it came out of is also guarantee the component will fail, the component inside the bag is safe because the bag keeps the static build-up on the outside of the bag.

Static does not always destroy it it can degrade, it can break a pn junction and the junction grow back, it will however be degraded and more prone to failure.

I forget the component failure rate due to static Compaq quoted when I was a server engineer but it has a substantial amount.

The PSU failing you mentioned at the end is likely to be component falure just buy a new PSU, PSU's are not static sensitive unless you open them and trust me you do not want to open them, if it lasted 3 years thats not too bad they do a lot of work.

Well i replaced the Antec unit with a OCZ psu and as yet have had no problems with either it or any of the other components.

BTW yesterday my other computer ( again with a damn ANTEC psu ) failed - .

I have just replaced it with a ACe 480W unit (£16) 0n amazon and it already shows better voltage values via asus probe. Although the ace is not as visually impressive as the ANTEC I’m guessing it will be more reliable
